There’s a grown-up party at the neighborhood pool tonight. I think it’s an excuse for everyone to act like the kids that are at home with babysitters. I remember when my parents used to host these types of events. You knew it was getting out of hand when people began to push each other in. (This was before the days of having slew of valuable electronics in pockets.) The finale usually included my father jumping from the balcony into the pool.
I know, I know. I’m very late to this. But, Portal came to the Mac earlier this year. And I finally downloaded it. In May. So, I had a few minutes tonight and now my eyes hurt. Soon my brain will follow.
While at the Orange Conference this year, my mind was turned upside down. The Big Deal Guys held a breakout session, where they take creativity in storytelling to a whole new level. They build Rube Goldberg contraptions on stage, using people as moving parts to demonstrate or tell part of the story. At first, I couldn’t get my head around it. How can something so unpredictable and outlandish work without taking away from the message? I cornered Andrew after one of the main sessions and talked at length about it. He pointed out that the message was never compromised. In fact, it is heightened by the dramatic fashion of the human machinery on stage taking part in telling the story. Everyone becomes invested and even forgiving if thing don’t always work.
I began to think about the possibilities with Andrew. Our Vacation Bible School was a few months away. How could we demonstrate what we were collecting would affect a village in Malawi? Our goal was to raise $10,000 to help build a deep water well with World Vision.
We talked about the start, first pouring dirty water into a scale. Next, pouring money on the other side, which would trip the start of the contraption. I followed up with our children’s ministry director and began to brainstorm. She also mentioned the memory verse for the week.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Matthew 22:37-39
How could we show this along with the contraption? Here’s a walkthru…
It was a blast not only to come up with the idea but to build some of the pieces and parts. Hammer, nails and saws were assembled. The smell of fresh-cut wood permeated my carport leading up to VBS. Finally, we began the week. We slowly introduced the idea at the end of each large group. I would come in and interrupt Jan, the head of the program. We would talk about a certain aspect of the memory verse (heart, soul and mind). For the heart, I brought a late Valentine’s Card. We had shoes and James Brown playing to symbolize soul. We talked through the verse and I promised I would get it right by the end.
Our family night concluded on Thursday night. I was extremely nervous throughout the day. Family night is always tough, it’s the end of VBS, the kids are restless, the volunteers are exhausted and the rest of the parents are trying to manage chaos. We closed the night with the contraption with minimal rehearsal time. And here is what happened….
I can’t say enough about The Big Deal Guys. Michael and Andrew’s presentation and time spent with anyone and everyone really helped me dream big. I also can’t say enough about the Rethink Group and the Orange Conference. Every year, I come away stretched enough to come back to my church. And speaking of which, I am so thankful that Jan, Julie and the rest of the folks at Peachtree Presbyterian don’t try to keep me from doing anything short of sin for God when it comes to the next generation.
(BTW: The Big Deal Guys are currently walking through the thirteen essentials you need for your children’s ministry program. A little lengthier discussion. But, I highly recommend it.)
As VBS approaches Thursday, I’m reminded that the fast will soon end. Tomorrow will be officially 21 days. My plan is to continue through Thursday and finish it as we end Family Night. I’ve got dinner plans afterwards with my family at Johnny Rockets for a burger, fries and milkshake.
It’s short-lived however. A friend and I are planning to begin P90X workout starting Monday. So, my menu will again be restricted. At least it will include meat and breads. All vegan has been tough, especially around BBQ.
We’re already halfway through the event. Can’t believe it.
The past mornings have been great. The first day is always the hardest. Everyone is trying to get their bearings. We end up starting late and it just felt off. It’s not a slight on anyone. It just feel a little sluggish. But, Vic (our senior pastor) did a great job demonstrating putting your faith in someone else. Another pastor blindfolded him and gave him directions. At the end of the stage stood two chairs: one with a container of pudding. Chuck lead him all the way up to the pudding but then instructed a few side steps to avoid it.
I also couldn’t find my kids the first day. After worship, I camped out at the Lodge where I caught up on email, etc. Time got away from me and I realized that I needed to retrieve my kids. I raced over to my son’s room only to find everyone gone. It became an initial search of where they might be. Later it became a borderline frantic search. I finally got someone who knew where all the leaders’ kids were and I located him. We ran back over to the Lodge to find my daughter there as well. We left and I apologized profusely, promising a lunch at Chik-Fil-A. It took forever to get to a restaurant and get their food. Their lips smacked of waffle fries and chicken and it took their mind off how absent-minded I can be.
Today flowed really well and the kids responded with even greater energy. I’ve been trying out the Go Bananas chat with the kids since I found it at an overnight camp my daughter and I attended. This rendition inspired me to include the mullet. After I picked up my kids (again, a little late), we walked through our contraption with our worship leader and a few others. They were really supportive and encouraging along the way. I’m hoping to capture some footage of it all and post it. Should be pretty cool.
The past couple of days have been the hardest. There have been a number of temptations and I’ve been awfully tired. It would’ve been so easy to reach out and grab a bite of food that’s off-limits or pour a cup of coffee for a little pick-me-up. But, I persevered. It’s an opportunity to glorify God’s name and to show my heart that He’s what I should focus on first.
I was recently interviewed by Inc.com about our switch from Lotus Notes to Google Apps. Probably didn’t make to many friends from my old life. But, I haven’t looked back yet.
I’ve been really pouring over a blog article I’m hoping will get published. I bumped into a few folks I keep up with via Twitter, etc. at a conference a month ago and they have a tech blog. They asked why I haven’t submitted anything yet. So, I’m taking them up on their invite.
I’ve been using Ommwriter, which really is so basic and wonderful. I suggest you check it out if you really want to focus.
A few weeks ago, I put this video together on the differences between iChat and Google Talk. We recently switched our back-end chat server from an internal server to Google Apps. I was really pleased at how well it turned out and got some good feedback as well.
